Cadence: Hi! I live and work in Minneapolis where my husband, Eli, and I own a photography business. I love sharing meals with friends and family, perusing design on Pinterest, running, and travel. Eli: I grew up in St. Cadence: We met nearly 5 years ago at First Avenue in Minneapolis. At the time, I was going dancing there every Saturday night. One night, I ran into several friends who happened to be there with their friend, Eli. I was really interested in him his hair! We spent the entire night talking, he asked for my number, and two years later we were married. The night we met we had a mutual friend that was there and pointed Cadence out to me.
Grew taller than my boyfriend
Alex and I recently celebrated our ninth anniversary, and my big question of the night was…. Should I wear heels? My friend Emma, of Books Are Magic fame , is an inch taller than her husband.
That was the start of our dating relationship. If you’re anything like me (tall and taller than most guys around you) you’ve probably had the thought.
And still am, three years later. Dealbreakers are bullshit. Recently, there have been studies claiming that short men divorce less, do more around the house and make better husbands. Even if it is sort of patronising. What do you mean, short guys can actually make good boyfriends? Are you joking? Is this a joke? Wow, my mind has been blown, etc.
Such as…. It took exactly two weeks from the point we started going out for me to forget about the fact that my boyfriend is significantly shorter than me. Three years on and people still comment. Perhaps the questions and comments are a patriarchal hangover from a time when men were expected to lift girls onto horses and joust for their honour. Firstly, what are you, an Edwardian?
Dating someone shorter than me
For some reason patriarchy, sexism, and what society considers to be ‘feminine’ there’s this whole thing when it’s a woman or femme-presenting person in a relationship who is the taller one. Straight men, it seems, are typically so easily emasculated by women that they must tower above them at all times. But is this still true today?
But I’m here to say that I love dating short men. In fact, it’s tall men that suck. METRO GRAPHICS. (Picture: Ella Byworth.
Does height matter to women while dating? Many of the men I speak to are concerned that being short puts women off. Conversely, a study cited by Independent found that women actually prefer shorter men with dad bods. Moreover, physical attributes end up being pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to couples keeping the romance alive and making a long-term, satisfying commitment to one another. Take a look below! Most insecurities in regards to height when it comes to men come from being too short as opposed to being too tall.
But there can be caveats to both, with tall men wishing they could shrink themselves while short men pray for a few or several more inches. A lot of women who have profiles on dating apps or websites set a height preference that is relatively high or at least above average. A lot of times, though, this has nothing to do with something personal or is really even founded at all. Someone who is self-assured will not allow this to bother them, or will at least let it go within a short time of dating someone.
And if not getting to wear high heels makes you a total deal breaker for her, consider the fact that you dodged a bullet. Kevin Hart is one A-lister who commands attention and oozes confidence.
In Defense of Dating Shorter Men
A friend and I were discussing this very issue today while having lunch in an outdoor cafe. We decided to count couples and see how many had a taller man and shorter woman, and how many had a shorter man and taller woman. This is all fine and good but not very scientific. What does science say about this important issue? The Gillis and Avis study shows that couples very frequently consist of a taller man together with a shorter woman.

Most women will say they prefer a taller man because it makes them feel more feminine since she’s probably heard most of her life that to be bigger than a man in any way is a turn-off. Put your arm around her when you’re sitting next to each other. Don’t discourage her from wearing heels if she wants to. Be assertive but not rude or controlling. Or why not take a turn as the little spoon? Remember that she likes you. Certainly you are both aware that you’re shorter than she is, but if she’s going out with you, it means she doesn’t care about that.
She sees something in you that is more important than your physical appearance. The fact that she’s not about to let the opinions of others stop her from dating you should make you feel confident in your relationship. Dress to look taller. You should only do this if you and your girlfriend have discussed the height difference and you both still feel uncomfortable with it. In fact, dating women has made me question every single problematic aspect of my relationships with men. One of those being an unhealthy fixation on height.
